UPDATE: MONDAY, October 5, 2015
Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known in the 1960s to the public as H. Rap Brown when he was chairperson of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), has been serving a sentence in federal custody of life without the possibility of parole imposed in 2002 by a Georgia Court. After spending five years in Administrative Detention i.e., Solitary Confinement, at a maximum security Georgia prison. The Georgia Department of Corrections determined that a solidarity movement initiated by Muslim inmates to elect Imam Al-Amin as the leader of Muslim inmates was a threat to the security of the Georgia prison system. On August 1, 2007, with no federal charges or convictions, the Georgia Department of Corrections turned Imam Al-Amin over to the Federal Bureau of Prisons where he was immediately transferred to the Supermax ADX USP in Florence, Colorado (The New Alcatraz), and confined to a cell seven-stories below ground, without fresh air, sunlight or interaction with other human beings (Sensory Deprivation) for SEVEN YEARS.
In 2013, Imam Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown) began to experience symptoms of declining health. He languished in a cell while his requests for medical attention were ignored by the ADX medical staff. Finally, with the intervention of family members, attorneys, The Jericho Movement (JERICO), Congressional Black Caucus members, human rights activists, The Imam Jamil Action Network (IJAN) and other organizations, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) conducted medical tests in June 2014. After further public pressure and urging the FBOP to stop the “Execution By Medical Neglect” of Imam Al-Amin, he was moved on July 15, 2014 from the Florence Supermax prison to the Federal Medical Center, in Butner, North Carolina.
On July 23, 2014, at the Butner FMC, after a bone marrow biopsy, findings confirmed that Imam Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown) had Smoldering Myeloma, an intermediate pre-cursor stage of Multiple Myeloma, cancer of the plasma cells. After a three-month stay at the Medical Center, Imam Al-Amin was moved to the USP Canaan Federal Penitentiary, in Waymart, Pennsylvania, where he was placed in general population. After 14 years of incarceration consisting of Administrative Detention i.e., Solitary Confinement, Imam Al-Amin finally was able to attend religious services and programs.
In addition to having Smoldering Myeloma, he is suffering from Sjogren’s Syndrome. Visitors recently have confirmed that he continues to suffer severe pain, swollen jaws and other symptoms, including swollen ankles, skin discoloration, dry eyes and dry mouth.

As-Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatu:
Imam Jamil Al-Amin’s blood tests have come back, and he has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma ( Cancer of the plasma cells). If it was not for the pressure that has been put on Bureau of Prisons these results might have been overlooked by this uncaring, unsympathetic Prison Industrial Complex.
The Imam is gravely ill, and the Supermax Prison is no place for a man in his condition to be. We must continue the pressure on the Bureau of Prisons to move Imam Jamil to a prison medical facility.
This is a call to action, contact the BOP, and express your concern over Imam Jamil’s health, and the neglect that he has been experiencing as a result of being incarcerated in facility, and not being afforded the urgent care that is a basic human right.
Please be polite when calling, and leave a message if sent to voicemail. Your call is an expression of concern for the welfare of Imam Jamil.

DETAILS ON IMAM JAMIL'S CONDITION
On the authority of Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) say, "Whoever of you who sees an evil must then change it with his hand. If he is not able to do so, then [he must change it ] with his tongue. And if he is not able to do so, then [he must change it] with his heart. And that is the weakest of faith." - (Sahih Muslim)
The Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA) continues to advocate for medical treatment for Imam Jamil Al-Amin and encourages continued action. Upon hearing of the Imam's medical condition approximately two weeks ago, the leadership of MANA consulted with the family of Imam Jamil and the leaders of the National Jamaat founded by him, and other allies, then initiated a series of actions including (but not limited to) contacting the Federal Bureau of Prisons in writing in order to notify them of the Imam's condition, register our concern for him, and urge that he receive the medical treatment to which he is entitled. Further we publicly urged that the Bureau of Prisons, and the Florence ADX facility where the Imam is being held be flooded with phone calls and letters doing the same. As the result of an outpouring of advocacy from the Muslim community, attention has been drawn to the injustice being visited upon Imam Jamil with the following result:
Imam Jamil has received treatment for the long-standing oral and dental infections which have triggered his condition, he has also received antibiotics following dental treatment.
However, Imam Jamil is still suffering from the effects of his long untreated condition:
1- He has lost 25 lbs. during the past two weeks because of a difficulty in swallowing and ingesting food due to abscesses and drainage in his mouth
2- His breathing has still not returned to normal
3- His feet remain tremendously swollen
Imam Jamil is in need of a doctor's care and he still has not been seen by a physician. The only medical treatment he has received has been from a dentist.
THE PRIORITY IS NOW FOR IMAM JAMIL TO BE EXAMINED AND TREATED BY A PHYSICIAN.
Imam Jamil sends his greetings and appreciation to all who have and continue to advocate on his behalf. He is aware that many people are concerned about his health, and that numerous calls and letters of concern over his health status have gone out to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Florence ADX prison (AKA in freedom and justice as "Domestic Guantanamo").
MANA continues to engage in advocacy actions, and will do so until the Imam's civil and human rights to health and health care are respected, and his medical needs are fulfilled. We urge your continued support of this effort and encourage continued individual and collection pray for Imam Jamil.
